PRO ARTS East Bay Open Studios

I will be taking part in the PRO ARTS East Bay Open Studios event that takes place June 5 & 6 and 12 &13 from 10:00 to 5:00 each day. This is a huge event involving over 400 artists throughout fourteen cities in the East Bay, and normally draws an annual audience over fifty thousand. I will be showing about forty paintings at Jack London Square inside the "Pavilion Building" (formerly Barnes and Noble), along with thirty-five other artists at that location.

There is a wealth of information about this event on the internet including an on-line Gallery where one can view samples of each artist's work, and read the artist's statement and bio. To view the on-line gallery go to http://proartsgallery.org/ebos/index.php.

Blackhawk Art Gallery

The beautiful new Blackhawk Art Gallery is located in the recently renovated Blackhawk Plaza between two new restaurants, "Stomp" (wine & small plates) and "Laurus Bistro" ( Mediterranean cuisine). The Gallery will be featuring a new juried show with over a hundred paintings and sculptures and an opening reception on Saturday, April 3rd, from 5 to 7 PM including food and beverages. I'll be part of the show with 3 or 4 paintings, one of which is shown below. A visit to the Blackhawk Paza is visual treat any time, but spring blossoms, and great art brings out the best. Shops are open 10 AM to 8PM daily.

Wild River Art Company in Bend, Oregon

The Wild River Art Company has just moved from Redmond, Oregon, into a beautiful new space in Bend, Oregon. Owner Scott Tuchel celebrated the opening of his new gallery on February 27, 2010. I'm pleased to have eight paintings showing there in the company of real master painters such as Harley Brown, Calvin Liang, and Heinie Hartwig. Bend, located on the beautiful Rogue River, is a great tourist destination in the high desert surrounded by the stunning scenery of the Cascade Mountain Range minutes away from Sisters, Sun River, and great skiing at Mt Batchelor. A really great place to stay, if you visit Bend, is Cabin Creek Bed & Breakfast, one of the best we have ever stayed in.

I've really enjoyed trying to capture the "big sky" feeling of Oregon's Cascade Range. Below are several of my paintings currently showing in the Wild River Art Company gallery in Bend:

The Ryde Trading Company is a special gallery. Owners Norman and Diana Shaw create high quality gemstone jewelry at surprisingly reasonable prices. The gallery also displays 40 of my original paintings of a wide array of California land and seascapes as well as many beautiful photographs of Delta scenes printed on canvas by renowned photographer Michael Pieretti.

The Gallery is located in Ryde, California on the Sacramento River near the historic Ryde Hotel, known for its fine dining and Sunday brunch. Nearby Walnut Grove, and the old Chinese village of Locke provide additional interest. Sunday brunch is also served at the luxurious Grand Island Mansion a few miles away, once famous as a meeting place for Hollywood stars and Presidents. Both the Ryde Hotel and the Grand Island Mansion have docks for visitors coming by boat.

The Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta covers over 1100 square miles, and includes over 700 miles of waterways and 1000 miles of levees, a special part of California.

The Ryde Trading Company Gallery is reached by taking scenic Highway 160 from Antioch to the intersection of Highways 160 and 220 in Ryde (about 35 minutes). For those heading for the Sierra, Highway 160 offers a pleasant, traffic-free ride to Sacramento where one can connect with I-80 or Highway 50. See map here.

Tiburon, California

Tiburon is a charming get-away-destination for a day-visit. It’s right on the Bay with beautiful views of San Francisco, Angel Island, the Corinthian Yacht Club, and the bridges. It’s a very small village, usually fog-free, with boutique shops, good restaurants, and a Carmel-like ambiance.

I usually have about 20 paintings showing in Saint Germain’s Jewels & Art, a gallery at 80F Main Street on Ark Row in Tiburon. These include land and seascapes of Northern California as well as local scenes of Tiburon and other Bay vistas. Two of the latter are shown above, one looking from Sam’s Anchor Café in Tiburon to San Francisco, and the other looking shoreward to Sam’s deck, a great spot for a scenic lunch or dinner. I recommend Sam’s as well as Scoma’s in nearby Sausalito for delightful dining on the Bay.

Lauterbrünnen Valley, Switzerland

Lauterbrünnen Valley, Switzerland

Some years ago, Sara and I skied the Lauberhorn, a world-cup downhill run in the Alps of Switzerland. We skied the entire length, ending at the small village of Wengen where I pulled out my throw-away camera and took a photo looking down into the Lauterbrünnen Valley, 2000 feet below. Last year I found the small photo and used it to paint the 24 x 30 piece above.
